TurkStat: Unemployment rate was 12.4%, employment rate was 43.8%

In the Household Labor Force Survey, as of January 2021, simultaneously with the European Union (EU) countries; New regulations have been introduced in order to harmonize the decisions of the 19th Conference of Labor Statisticians (ICLS) of the International Labor Organization (ILO) and the relevant EU regulation. 19. With the ICLS, complementary indicators have been defined in addition to employment and unemployment in order to follow the developments in the labor market more accurately. These complementary indicators, published by the EU Statistical Office (Eurostat), have started to be included in the bulletin.

Labor force statistics, which are published monthly as quarterly moving averages, have been published as independent monthly assumptions since 2021. Detailed information about the new regulations can be found in the metadata.

Seasonally adjusted unemployment rate was 13.2%

In Turkey, the number of unemployed persons aged 15 and over decreased by 265 thousand people in May 2021 compared to the previous month and became 4 million 237 thousand people. Unemployment rate, on the other hand, decreased by 0.6 points to 13.2%.

Seasonally adjusted employment rate was 43.8%

The number of people employed decreased by 216 thousand people in May 2021 compared to the previous month and became 27 million 844 thousand people, while the employment rate decreased by 0.4 points to 43.8%.

Seasonally adjusted labor force participation rate was 50.5%

In May 2021, the workforce decreased by 481 thousand people compared to the previous month and became 32 million 81 thousand people, and the labor force participation rate was 50.5% with a decrease of 0.8 points.

Seasonally adjusted unemployment rate for the young population was 24.0%, employment rate was 31.9%

Unemployment rate among the young population covering the 15-24 age group was 24.0% with a decrease of 2 points compared to the previous month, and the employment rate was 31.9% with an increase of 0.1 percentage points. The labor force participation rate in this age group decreased by 1.1 points compared to the previous month and was realized as 41.9%.

55.2% of seasonally adjusted employment took place in the service branch

Compared to the previous month, the number of people employed in May decreased by 312 thousand people in agriculture, 57 thousand people in industry, 24 thousand people in construction sector and 129 thousand people in service sector. 16.9% of the employed were in agriculture, 21.3% in industry, 6.6% in construction and 55.2% in services.

Seasonally adjusted idle labor rate was 27.2%

The rate of idle labor force consisting of time-related underemployment, potential labor force and the unemployed decreased by 0.2 points compared to the previous month and became 27.2% in May 2021. While the combined rate of time-related underemployment and the unemployed was 19.3%, the combined rate of potential workforce and unemployed was 21.7%.

Unemployment rate decreased by 0.2 points compared to the same month of the previous year and became 12.4%. The number of unemployed increased by 250 thousand people compared to the same month of the previous year and reached 3 million 942 thousand people.

The employment rate increased by 2.8 points compared to the same month of the previous year and became 43.8%. The number of employed persons increased by 2 million 246 thousand persons to 27 million 841 thousand persons.

The labor force participation rate increased by 3.1 points compared to the same month of the previous year and became 50.0%. The number of people joining the workforce increased by 2 million 496 thousand people to 31 million 783 thousand people.

The rate of unregistered workers in the non-agricultural department was 15.6%

The rate of unregistered employees, who show the share of those working without being affiliated with the social security institution in total employees, decreased by 1.6 points compared to the same month of the previous year and became 27.9%. The rate of informal workers in non-agricultural branches decreased by 1.6 points compared to the same month of the previous year and became 15.6%.
