Beware of Cyber Crimes on Eid

ESET Istanbul Technical Manager Gürcan Şen made offers to avoid being a victim of cyber fraud during the festive period. Sen’s recommendations are as follows:

Inform your elder family elders

During the pandemic period, the rate of use of internet and social media platforms by the elderly has increased. This age group, whose digital literacy is relatively low, needs to be informed more about the threats they may encounter online.

Be on the lookout for fake online donation sites! A lot of sacrifices are made during the Eid period through donations to charitable institutions and by proxy. Especially if you are planning to pay online, get real information about the charity you are targeting, and do not be a victim of fake contacts that may arise in this period.

Beware of invalid holiday greetings

With the digitalization of holiday greetings, online card sending and congratulatory messages are also increasing. Be cautious before clicking on e-cards from unknown names and links to these applications.

Don’t be fooled by impossible offers. Be on the lookout for messages and e-mails such as ‘Free’, ‘You Won’ that attract the attention of users. Don’t prestige offers that seem too good to be true!

Do not make cash transactions from public Wi-Fi hotspots unless necessary. The fact that the holiday is long and it coincides with the holiday period increases the rate of use of internet connections in public areas. Do not do banking processes or online shopping from public Wi-Fi hotspots with questionable security. Your private information can be viewed by others.

Back up your valuable data before traveling and store it in a safe environment. In this way, you will not lose your information when your computer, tablet or phone is stolen or lost.

Do not neglect system patches. The vulnerabilities in the operating system are priced as a valuable virus infection tool by cyber bugs. Therefore, take into account the update notices on your computer before you go on vacation and do not forget to install system patches.

Use security software on your devices.More than one billion wasteful software in the virtual world; trying to access our private, financial, or business information. Therefore, use a well-known antivirus or internet security software on your computers, tablets and phones. It will keep you away from many hassles.
